Letter from Lyman Kennon in Chicago to Colonel H.C. Merriam, U.S. Army, Fort Laramie, Wyoming, December 10, 1888, responding to Merriam's comments about guard duty. Includes a card titled Duties of Sentinels, containing material condensed from Kennon's work, which was the first manual on guard duty formally adopted by the U.S. War Department. Also includes a note about the manual cut from a newspaper, and corrections to the Standing Orders for the First Corps of Cadets, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia, issued by Thomas F. Edmands, July 1, 1900.
